Year Three of head coach Steve Sarkisian is going to bring some pressure. Improvement was made during this past season, improving to an 8-4 regular season. If the win total improves by even one game this year, the highly sought-after conference championship game could be within reach for Texas.

Playing through a Big 12 schedule is never easy though and that’s with nine other teams. Four more will be added for the 2023 season, with BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF having their inaugural year in the Power Five conference. Old foes will be up to their usual tricks as well, hoping to knock off the soon-to-be SEC members.

The Big 12 announced Texas’ full schedule on Tuesday, including three nonconference showdowns. Two of the newcomers will feature, including in-state opponent Houston.

  • Week 1 (Sept. 2) – vs. Rice
  • Week 2 (Sept. 9) – at Alabama
  • Week 3 (Sept. 16) – vs. Wyoming
  • Week 4 (Sept. 23) – at Baylor
  • Week 5 (Sept. 30) – vs. Kansas
  • Week 6 (Oct. 7) – Oklahoma (Dallas, TX)
  • Week 7 (Oct. 14) – BYE
  • Week 8 (Oct. 21) – at Houston
  • Week 9 (Oct. 28) – vs. BYU
  • Week 10 (Nov. 4) – vs. Kansas State
  • Week 11 (Nov. 11) – at TCU
  • Week 12 (Nov. 18) – at Iowa State
  • Week 13 (Nov. 24) – vs. Texas Tech

Potential final rodeo for Texas with Big 12 schedule

Nobody is quite sure exactly when Texas and Oklahoma are going to leave the Big 12 in favor of the SEC. Both commissioners have stated 2025 is the timeline as of now but if we have learned anything with realignment, things can change on a dime.

Texas could be facing off against some long-time opponents for the last time with this 2023 schedule. Oklahoma will not be one, with the annual Red River Shootout expected to continue on its traditional October date once making the move.

Baylor is the most-played opponent in Texas history and when the two meet in Waco this September, it will mark meeting No. 112. Just over 100 miles separate the two schools along I-35, breaking what would be one of the Big 12’s most underrated rivalries.

An old Southwest Conference rivalry will once again die once the SEC transition is complete with TCU. Fort Worth will be the site of the final showdown, with Texas looking to end what has been a horrendous record against the Horned Frogs since becoming Big 12 members.

While no moves have been made official, the feeling of a final rodeo will follow the Texas team all season.
