Colton Vasek had a change of heart.

The On300 EDGE from Austin (Texas) Westlake was always a priority for hometown Texas, but was leaning out of state for the bulk of his recruitment. This fall has led to a change of heart for Vasek.

Ahead of Westlake’s playoff opener on Thursday, Vasek flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to the Longhorns, where his father Brian Vasek played. Steve Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski never took their feet off the gas with the nation’s No. 20-rated EDGE defender.

“The staff, the winning culture, the tradition … Everything stands out,” Vasek said of Texas’ late push to flip him.

“That’s always great to have the option to stay home,” Vasek told On3 previously. “It’s in my backyard and I can see their development along the D-line.”

Vasek was high on Oregon before the Sooners garnered momentum in July, right when the On300 defender had planned to put a pin in his recruitment to focus on making a run at another state championship. Last year as a junior, Vasek had a three-sack effort in the title game against Dallas powerhouse Denton (Texas) Guyer and captured Most Outstanding Player honors on the defensive side of the ball for the Chaps.

Vasek’s recruitment spiraled from then on with Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Clemson and Texas Tech all jumping to the forefront with the Austin native. While his eyes were on out-of-state contenders initially, visits back to the Forty Acres this fall have loomed large in Vasek reconsidering his options, including “staying home,” as he noted.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pounder Longhorns legacy will be back at Texas this weekend for the primetime conference showdown against TCU on Saturday. Vasek is the No.137 player in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
