Texas coach Steve Sarkisian dealt with a quarterback competition between Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card all offseason. Ultimately, Ewers won it. Then, against Alabama, he suffered an SC sprain and was expected to miss four to six weeks. Since then, though, he has been dressing for games and reportedly throwing the ball in practice.

Since the injury, Steve Sarkisian has been relying on Hudson Card. On a road trip to Texas Tech, he came up short, losing to the Red Raiders in overtime.

While speaking to the media, Steve Sarkisian was asked for an update on the team’s quarterback situation, and if there was anything to report about what to expect on Saturday night.

“It’s still up in the air,” Steve Sarkisian said.

“They all practiced today like I said. They practiced last week. I think we’ll know more as the week goes on.”

A bit of a non-update from Steve Sarkisian. However, he seems to want to play things close to the vest in conference play. Hypothetically, if Texas’ opponent doesn’t know what quarterback to expect, then the team has to scout and prepare two quarterbacks. At the same time, it would still be an early return to the field if Ewers were ready to go. So, Card remains the likely starter.

Texas’ next game is against West Virginia on October 1st.

Steve Sarkisian on why Texas isn’t better

Steve Sarkisian took over the Texas job with the expectation that he could bring the team back to prominence. To this point, the team clearly has talent but the results on the field haven’t met expectations. A reporter even asked why his tenure hasn’t gone better.

“Sometimes it’s easy to look at result and think, ‘Oh, we’re not better,'” Steve Sarkisian said. “But I see a lot of improvement on where we’re at. Naturally the consistency factor is critical, and we can’t afford to have lapses in our consistency in play, in our preparation, or we’ll get the result that we had.”

To this point in his tenure at Texas, Steve Sarkisian has a 7-9 record.
