Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian once again has a room full of options when it comes to who will lead the Longhorns into battle on Saturday. After going down to the wire with injuries ahead of the UTSA game and ultimately starting Hudson Card, Sarkisian revealed that all four of Texas’ quarterbacks practiced on Monday.

It’s great news for Texas as they prepare for a Big 12 showdown on the road versus the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

“Steve Sarkisian said all his QBs practiced today, including Maalik Murphy and Quinn Ewers: ‘Everybody was in there doing their team drills and different things,'” InsideTexas‘s Joe Cook reported from the head coach’s press conference.

Quinn Ewers, who started the season for Texas before suffering a collarbone injury, has progressed daily since his injury versus Alabama. He even suited up and tossed the ball during pregame warmups on Saturday before the UTSA game.

True freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy was not in contention last week to take over for Ewers due to his health, according to Sarkisian. However, he’s been dressed out and warming up for each of the team’s first three games this season. Murphy was a four-star prospect in the 2022 signing class, and No. 205 overall, according to the On3 Consensus.

Sarkisian explains decision to go with Card for Game 3

Texas took down UTSA on Saturday night in decisive fashion after the ‘Horns rushed for just shy of 300 yards. Sarkisian had a nearly day-of decision to make on who would start at quarterback due to Week 2 injuries.

There was a chance that the team would turn to redshirt freshman Charles Wright, who hadn’t played in a game yet. But Texas went with Card, who passed for 161 yards on 15-for-23 passing with one touchdown pass in the 41-20 win.

After the win, Sarkisian explained why he played Card despite his limited reps last week.

“We went with Hud,” Sarkisian said. “We knew we had to come in here and run the ball… The biggest play he made tonight was with his legs on 2nd and 22. That just shows, like I talked about when we decided to make Quinn the starter, Hudson Card bleeds burnt orange and white, that’s why he’s on our leadership committee. When his number was called, he gave this program everything he could, tonight again, like he did a week ago.”
