Top Texas pledge Brenen Thompson reiterates commitment to Longhorns
Spearman (Texas) four-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson entered the week as Texas‘ highest-ranked and arguably most important recruit.
Steve Sarkisian made that clear by stopping by Thompson’s West Texas hometown on the first day coaches could do in-home visits Sunday. Thompson’s commitment became even more critical after Five-Star Plus+ wideout Evan Stewart chose Texas A&M over the Longhorns on Monday.
Texas can’t afford to loose Thompson. And it looks like they won’t.
He tweeted Tuesday that he is “not going anywhere,” doubling down on his Oct. 6 verbal commitment to Texas.
Thompson is the No. 50 overall recruit in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
“I’m excited to be in the offense,” Thompson told Inside Texas when he committed to Texas. “I’m excited to go be a big playmaker. Coach Sark is doing a great job. He’s great at what he does. I believe in him for sure.”
Brenen Thompson fills a crucial playmaking need in the Texas recruiting class
The Longhorns have the No. 10 recruiting class in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking, and Brenen Thompson is the only player in the class ranked in the top 100 of the On3 Consensus.
The Longhorns previously had another top-100 commit in Tyler (Texas) Tyler Legacy four-star running back Jamarion Miller. But Miller flipped to Alabama last week.
Texas was also hoping to get a commitment from Stewart, who is the No. 4 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus and one of four Five-Star Plus+ prospects across the nation.
But he appeared to be leaning towards in-state and future SEC rival Texas A&M for the last few weeks before officially committing to the school Monday.
Thompson is the only wide receiver pledge among Texas’ 20 commits.
