Texas‘ regular season came to a close on Friday with a win over Baylor. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, Kansas State took care of business to keep Texas out of the Big 12 Championship Game. So when Steve Sarkisian provided Cole Hutson and Isaiah Neyor injury updates Monday, he did so knowing they’ll have some extra time to recover before a potential bowl game.

Neyor won’t be back for the bowl game, having suffered a season-ending torn ACL in August. Hutson might be able to.

“Cole’s got an ankle sprain, as you guys know sometimes they take longer than others,” Sarkisian said. “But I anticipate having him back ready to go for the bowl game.”

Hutson was carted off the field in the Baylor game, with Sarkisian saying after the game he was slated to get MRIs done to reveal the extent of the damage.

That it’s not an injury that should sideline him for very long is obviously a real positive.

Neyor’s rehab also seems to be going well, and Sarkisian provided a more lengthy update on his process on Monday when he met with reporters.

Isaiah Neyor injury update quite positive

Sarkisian had an optimistic outlook on Neyor’s progress as he recovers from a torn ACL.

The Isaiah Neyor injury during fall camp deprived Texas of one of its anticipated major contributors at receiver in 2022. Neyor transferred in from Wyoming last winter after starring in the Mountain West Conference.

“Isaiah’s done a nice job kind of with his recovery,” Sarkisian said. “You think about the timetable of just simple math, what does nine months look like out? He should put himself in good position to get himself ready for next season. We’ve got high expectations for him. He’s got a great work ethic, great drive. Do I think he could have helped us this year? For sure, but that’s part of football, sometimes things happen.”

In two years at Wyoming, Neyor recorded 52 catches for 1,116 yards and 12 touchdowns. The vast majority of that production — 44 catches for 878 yards and all 12 touchdowns — came during his 2021 campaign.

So Texas would love to have him healthy again for the 2023 campaign.

“He’s doing the things necessary for him to get himself back in shape to be the player that he’s capable of being and why he came to the University of Texas,” Sarkisian said.
