Vince Young had the type of career every Texas quarterback aspires to have. Moving forward, the former Longhorns star sees some fantastic potential in the current quarterback room, and believes the addition of Arch Manning will only add to it.

Speaking with Keyshawn Johnson on ESPN’s First Take, Young revealed what Manning’s addition will mean for the Texas quarterback room.

“He’s in a family that is going to teach him the best way they can, the way they know how that works. I really feel like that’s not going to be an issue for him at all. What I do know is, in this quarterback room, having these big time quarterbacks from Maalik Murphy, from Hudson Card to Quinn [Ewers], it’s going to be a heated competition in that quarterback room. Which we all like. It doesn’t do nothing but make him better. It makes all of them better. It makes them mentally tough. That’s what we’re going to need,” stated Young. “When you’re playing at the University of Texas, you’re pretty much an NFL quarterback already. So, you’re going to need to have that pressure and that competition in that quarterback room.

“I’m just happy that he made the decision to come to the University of Texas. He’s already helping out with recruiting and things like that. So it’s going to be good for him, as well as all the rest of our quarterbacks. I love it because I’m going to be sitting there in that room with them, and I’m going to be messing with them and making sure they’re competing against each other to be the best. Not only against themselves, but for the University in general.”

Simply, Young believes iron sharpens iron, and that the young stud quarterbacks will all be better off for being teammates. Continuing, Young stated his belief that Manning should redshirt when he comes to Texas, as it would be best for his career in the long run.

“I really feel like Arch has a great opportunity. One of the things that I’m hearing is that he is going to redshirt. That’s going to help out a lot, so you can understand how to travel with the team. Get the feel of the fans. The University,” stated Young. “So, when you have those types of things and you take a year off like when I played with Coach [Mack] Brown, I redshirted. And I feel like that redshirt year helped me understand how to be a quarterback at the University of Texas. And then what you go through. Traveling and things like that.

“So, if he does that, I really feel like it’s going to be good for him to sit back, and kind of learn and also get familiar with the offense and stuff like that. Hopefully, if he does that, I think that’s going to help him for the future.”

Time will tell what Arch Manning decides to do, but one thing is for sure — all Texas quarterbacks are better off when taking the advice of Vince Young into the equation.
