Joey McGuire has been the head coach of Texas Tech less than 24 hours and he already has his first commitment.

And he went to his old stomping grounds to land the player.

Cedar Hill (Texas) three-star cornerback Jalon Peoples committed Monday to McGuire and the Red Raiders.

McGuire coached at Cedar Hill for 14 seasons before joining the Baylor coaching staff for the 2017 football season. As Cedar Hill’s head coach, McGuire won Texas state titles in 2006, 2013 and 2014. He went 141-42 overall during his tenure.

Jalon Peoples older brothers, Richard Moore and Dimitri Moore, played for McGuire at Cedar Hill. Dimitri Moore was a two-time captain for McGuire at Cedar Hill and Richard Moore was a leader on the 2013 and 2014 championships teams.

Dimitri Moore was at Vanderbilt from 2017-2020 before grad transferring to Missouri State for the 2021 season. Richard Moore spent two seasons at Texas A&M before transferring to SMU.

Peoples was previously committed to Kansas but he backed away from his commitment in September.

The cornerback had tweeted earlier Monday that he was shutting down his commitment.

Jalon Peoples is the 10th commit in the Texas Tech class

Jalon Peoples is the No. 690 overall recruit in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Half of those recruits play in the secondary. He will be joining Broken Arrow (Okla.) Broken Arrow four-star cornerback Maurion Horn, Bethany (Okla.) three-star cornerback Jocelyn Malaska, Gunter (Texas) three-star safety Hut Graham and Oklahoma City (Okla.) Heritage Hall cornerback Gavin Freeman in the defensive backfield next season.

Texas Tech now has the No. 58 class in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking. The Red Raiders were the No. 66 class before Peoples committed.

McGuire’s first day on the job is not done but it looks like he is already proving On3’s Jeremy Crabtree right when he wrote earlier Monday about the new head coach in Lubbock, Texas.

“In today’s college football, no new hire is a sure thing from a recruiting standpoint,” Crabtree wrote. “But it sure looks like Texas Tech hit a home run with Joey McGuire.”
