Toward the end of March, Texas A&M Aggies tight end Baylor Cupp announced he would be entering the transfer portal. A former top recruit, he has announced where his next destination will be, with the Texas Tech Red Raiders earning his commitment on Tuesday afternoon.

New head coach Joey McGuire has been working the transfer portal hard this offseason, looking to bring new life into the Texas Tech program. After only bringing in 18 players via the 2022 recruiting class, Cupp makes the 11th transfer for the Red Raiders. He’s not the first from within the state as well, with former Texas Longhorns safety Tyler Owens coming in as well.

Injuries have plagued Cupp throughout his entire career, having season-ending issues for his first two seasons on campus. In 2019, it was described as an ankle problem during fall practice. A non-specified injury occurred the following season, also during fall camp. This past year was the first time Cupp was healthy and was able to get some game action.

Though he’s already heading into his fourth season in college ball, his redshirt in 2019 and the free year from the NCAA for 2020 mean he has three years of eligibility remaining. He’ll also be immediately eligible at Texas Tech.

Cupp played in 10 games for the Aggies this year, even making a start. However, he was never able to get on the stat sheet and will leave College Station without making a reception. With Texas Tech being the next destination, Cupp will be working toward making a contribution with McGuire.

Travis Koontz was the top tight end last season for the Red Raiders, having 21 receptions for 206 yards and four touchdowns. However, he is no longer with the program, making the position one of need during the offseason in Lubbock. If Cupp is able to stay healthy, he has the opportunity to be one of the top tight ends in the country.

Cupp was a four-star prospect coming out of high school according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. He ranked as the top tight end in the country and No. 56 overall. He was the No. 10 prospect in the Lone Star State, with plenty of elite programs chasing after his signature.

In the On3 Consensus transfer portal rankings, Cupp was the No. 7 tight end available in the cycle. The RPM had him slated 100% to Texas Tech, with the Red Raiders being able to get the job done.
