It didn’t take long for Gladewater (Texas) wide receiver DJ Allen to drum up interest after his decommitment from TCU. The four-star wideout was offered by Texas Tech’s new staff, the first of many schools likely to ramp up their recruitment.

The 5-foot-11, 189-pound Allen is the No. 173 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. The industry as a whole rates him as the No. 26 wide receiver in the cycle, while On3 is slightly higher, pegging him as the No. 23 player at his position.

Allen has retweeted multiple tweets from the Texas Tech program’s Twitter account in recent days, and at least virtually, the interest looks to be mutual. The Red Raiders have 11 players committed in the 2022 cycle, but only one wide receiver: three-star Tyler King.

Oklahoma State, Baylor and Arkansas are other schools that could potentially get involved as the early signing period nears. The latter two were among his finalists when he committed to TCU.

Allen is the fourth Horned Frogs 2022 commit to publicly back off their pledge to TCU following the abrupt resignation of head coach Gary Patterson on Oct. 31. He joins wide receiver Matthew Golden, defensive lineman Trevon McAlpine, and safety Ja’Dais Richard. Allen announced the day after Patterson’s resignation that he was reopening his recruitment but had yet to actually decommit. He made it official on Thursday.

DJ Allen is a versatile athlete

Allen plays four different sports – football, basketball, baseball and track. He has a 100-meter dash time of 10.82 seconds, and in football, he was the Class 3A District 6 Most Valuable Player as a junior. He was a first-team all-district selection as a sophomore.

As a junior in 2020, Allen notched 1,316 yards receiving and 17 touchdown catches in 2020. He also added 125 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

Allen has also made an impression on On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power.

“The two things that immediately jump out about DJ Allen are his production and athleticism,” Power said over the summer. “He is dangerous as a vertical threat and shows the ability to win in contested situations. The ball skills check out in the camp setting as well. Allen’s on-field speed is validated on the track, where he ran the 100 meters in 10.82 seconds this spring. He’s not a smaller receiver either – measuring 5-foot-11, 190 pounds this spring.”
