Joey McGuire didn’t spend his first day as the leader of the Texas Tech program celebrating his accomplishment. He went to work.

He picked up three commitments from three-star recruits out of Cedar Hill (Texas), where McGuire coached for 14 years and won three state titles. The commitments moved the Red Raiders recruiting class from No. 66 in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking to No. 58. He offered numerous players from the state of Texas, demonstrating his commitment to recruiting the Lone Star State.

And he did it all without any other coaches on his staff already and trying to figure out moving his life from one part of the state to another.

2 commitments mark Joey McGuire’s immediate impact at Texas Tech

Within an hour span, two Cedar Hill players committed to Joey McGuire and Texas Tech. And then a few hours later, a third joined them.

The first commitment was three-star cornerback Jalon Peoples. Peoples is ranked No. 690 in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. His brothers, Richard Moore and Dimitri Moore, played for McGuire at Cedar Hill.

Then three-star defensive lineman Harvey Dyson III joined his high school teammate in announcing his commitment to the Red Raiders. McGuire had extended the offer to Dyson earlier in the day.

The third commitment was a flip. McGuire offered three-star defensive lineman Syncere Massey, who started the day as an Arizona State commit. About two hours after his offer, he decommitted from the Sun Devils and then announced his commitment 45 minutes later.

Sidney Mbanasor was McGuire’s 1st offer

Pflugerville (Texas) tight end Sidney Mbanasor received the honor being the first commit to secure an offer from Joey McGuire as the head coach of Texas Tech.

Mbanasor is an unranked athlete from the suburbs of Austin, Texas. He has been a late riser for teams across the country. Vanderbilt offered him on Oct. 22 and he visited the school for their game against Mississippi State the next day. He picked up an offer from Utah on Oct. 28.

Before that, he only had an offer from Morgan State.

Joey McGuire’s other offers included players he was recruiting at Baylor

Dyson may have been the most notable player to receive an offer Monday from Joey McGuire because he pretty much committed on the spot, but he was far from the only.

Choctaw (Okla.) three-star offensive lineman Cade McConnell picked up an offer from McGuire. McConnell is currently committed to TCU, which is also undergoing a coaching change following Gary Patterson leaving the program last week.

He offered four recruits in the 2023 recruiting class, including four-star Crandall (Texas) athlete Samuel Omosigho. Omosigho is the No. 319 player in the On3 Consensus and No. 220 player in the On300.

Two were Carrollton (Texas) Hebron linebacker Carson Dean and Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial EDGE Trey Wilson. Both were previously offered by McGuire at Baylor.

The other was Denton (Texas) Ryan offensive lineman Kolt De La Torre.

Joey McGuire is hitting the ground running in his home state of Texas

Joey McGuire is a Texan through and through. He went to Crowley (Texas) High in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, graduated from UTA and then immediately returned to be an assistant at Crowley. He then moved to Cedar Hill as an assistant before serving as head coach for 14 seasons and winning three state titles.

In 2017, he moved to Waco, Texas, to serve as an assistant coach at Baylor, where he worked until Monday.

On3’s Jeremy Crabtree said earlier Monday that background can set McGuire up for success in his new job in West Texas. He predicted McGuire would focus on succeeding in-state, and that appears to be the case.

“Joey McGuire has made a name for himself as one of Baylor’s top recruiters and on-field coaches. But what is really exciting about this hire is the ties throughout the high school coaching community in the Lone Star State,” Crabtree said. “Simply put, McGuire is a Texas football coach through and through. And that still resonates with the high school coaches in Texas, who act as the gatekeepers to top prospects more than anywhere in the country.”
