The offseason has been eventful in an unfortunate way for the Malzahn family. Gus Malzahn was in a car accident last month and in January, his wife, Kristi, spent two weeks in the hospital with an infection. On The Paul Finebaum Show last week, the UCF skipper shared an update and what he’s learned from these experiences this offseason.

“It was a real wakeup call, we really appreciate all the prayers,” Malzahn said. “She’s doing real well. Her dad passed, we really appreciate everyone reaching out.

“Football at the end of the day is not that important. I’ve learned a lot. Hoping I’m a better husband, dad, leader, coach. When you go through adversity, you always try to have something positive and be better because of it.”

Malzahn provided a welcome update on Feb. 3 that Kristi was out of the hospital and healthy. Though the details of her condition initially remained private, Malzahn explained in an interview with Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, explaining that the hospital stint was an extremely scary time for his family.

“There were times I was scared to death I was going to lose her,” Malzahn said of his wife’s hospitalization. “I kept praying and I knew others were praying, too. We were overwhelmed by family, friends and fans who were sending their prayers our way. I believe Kristi is with us today because of the power of prayer and, of course, the doctors and nurses at Orlando Health were amazing.”

Malzahn tweets following Nick Saban-Jimbo Fisher spat

Even in departure, former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn found the perfect time to take a jab at former rival Alabama and its head coach Nick Saban amid the fallout from his viral comments on Texas A&MJackson State and NIL that he made Wednesday night.

“Just got on Twitter for the first time today – did I miss anything?” Malzahn, the current UCF head coach wrote.

Unless Malzahn has been sleeping under a rock since Wednesday night, he’s certainly trolling his former in-state rival, which is the most likely scenario.

While Malzahn doesn’t have to square up against Saban and the Crimson Tide after last season’s jump to Central Florida, he’ll always have the 2013 Iron Bowl. The now infamous “kick six” that saw Chris Davis run a 109-yard missed field goal return back for a touchdown will live on in Auburn fans’ memories.

Auburn fans will forever remember that moment for the rest of their lives, and Malzahn surely gets a kick out of revisiting the rivalry that brought him one of the signature victories in his career.
