This time last week, Tre Edwards was starting his official visit to UCLA. That visit changed his recruitment.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker out of Chula Vista (Calif.) Mater Dei Catholic went into that visit high on the Bruins, but he did not expect to commit this soon. After picking up an offer from UCLA in late January, Edwards took a visit to Westwood in April, and the Bruins have been trending since.

The official visit closed the deal for the No. 250 prospect in the On3 Consensus.

“The official visit changed everything,” Edwards told On3. “It just felt like home. About midway through the visit, I had that feeling and I knew I wanted to commit.”

Edwards chose not to act on that feeling during the visit. He went back home, slept on it for a night, and after waking up Monday with those same feelings, he made the call.

“I called coach Norton and told him I was ready to commit. He was excited, he let coach Kelly know, and then he called me. I took my time, but when I knew I found where I wanted to be, there was no reason to wait.

“The coaches were excited. Coach Norton can’t wait to work with me and coach Kelly wants me to help build this recruiting class.”

UCLA has some momentum. They picked up a commitment from four-star running back Roderick Robinson II Thursday and they are looking to add more this summer.

The staff Kelly is putting together is helping shape the 2023 class.

“Coach Norton is great. We just connect. He is a great teacher, he has all that experience, and I know he can really help me. Him being at UCLA put them high on my list and he was a big part of my decision.”

Academics played a role too. The connection with the players did as well. Edwards knows he found the place he fits in best.

“My recruitment is completely done,” Edwards said. “The vibe with the players, being able to play for coach Norton, and the education I can get makes UCLA best for me.

“After feeling that way during my official visit, I knew I was ready to jump on it. No other school can change my mind. UCLA is where I want to be.”

The No. 21 linebacker in the country chose UCLA over Arizona and Oregon.
