One of the early themes of the UCLA season so far has been their crowd at the Rose Bowl. It’s been lackluster, to say the least, with shots of the stadium being posted on Twitter every week. Saturday against South Alabama may have been the worst for an 11 a.m. PT kick-off time.

Some people involved with the program are over the lack of attendance, including legendary quarterback Troy Aikman. He took to Twitter to voice his frustration, saying it may be time to build a stadium on campus. However, Aikman also called out the Bruins for how they played on the field.

“This is an embarrassment but we couldn’t fill the Rose Bowl in 1988 when we were the #1 team in the country,” Aikman said. “Anyone else at UCLA think it’s time for an on-campus 30,000 seat stadium? Of course, if we can’t play better than we did today, it would be half-empty too.”

Even when there is no traffic in the area, the Rose Bowl is around a half hour away from the UCLA campus, making it difficult for students to get to the game. As for Saturday, classes have not yet started for the Bruins, meaning even fewer students would have the opportunity to make the trip.

Aikman pointed it out himself but the level of play UCLA is playing at surely cannot help either. The Bruins escaped with a win against South Alabama on Saturday, winning 32-31. Nearly 400 yards of offense was given up and a last-second field goal gave Chip Kelly’s squad the win.

Even so, when Aikman was in school, nobody would travel out when the school was at the top of college football. The legendary quarterback thinks UCLA needs to add an on-campus stadium as soon as possible.
