Mission Viejo (Calif.) three-star wide receiver Mikey Matthews has committed to Utah. He chose the Utes over multiple programs, including Arizona, Colorado and Michigan.

Matthews is the No. 482 overall prospect and No. 67 wide receiver in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 33 player in California.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound wideout is the 16th member of Utah’s 2023 recruiting class. The Utes’ group is currently No. 40 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 5 in the Pac-12.

Matthews is one of four wide receivers committed to head coach Kyle Whittingham and his staff. The others are Sacramento (Calif.) Inderkum three-star Carlos Wilson, Kahuku (Hi.) three-star Kainoa Carvalho and Lakeland (Fla.) three-star Daidren Zipperer.

Gilbert (Ariz.) Highland four-star offensive tackle Caleb Lomu is the highest-rated recruit in the Utes’ class as the No. 207 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus. On3 rates him higher than other recruiting services as the No. 96 overall prospect in the 2023 On300.

More on Smith’s recruitment

The California native participated in the Battle 7v7 event in New Orleans in March. His performance received praise from On3’s Sam Spiegelman.

“Mikey Matthews made the trek cross-country from Mission Viejo (Calif.) to help EPS Blaze make a deep run in New Orleans. Matthews came away with a handful of the biggest receptions throughout the week, especially on championship Sunday,” Spiegelman wrote. “The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder is undersized, but electric getting downfield and exceptional making catches in traffic. Matthews has outstanding hands, great stop-start quickness and gave defensive backs fits since he landed in Louisiana. There’s a Steve Smith element to Matthews’ game.”

Matthews has an On3 NIL Valuation of $6.4K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
