Tim Corbin helped lead Vanderbilt’s baseball program to their fourth SEC Tournament title this weekend and their third with him as their skipper with a win over Texas A&M.

It was a big-time accomplishment for the Commodores considering they came into Hoover as the No. 4 seed with a 37-17 record. It was even more so considering they had dropped six of 10 heading into the conference tournament.

Still, Corbin doesn’t buy into the effect of streaks, regardless of if they’re good or bad. He said it’s all part of the season and something everyone should expect. That’s why he gave his players credit for hoisting a trophy at the end of this weekend even in spite of all that they’d faced in May.

“I have never used the word skid. (I’ve) never used the word streak with the boys because it’s just kind of the nature of the season. It happens,” Corbin said. “Whether you win or happen to lose two, three in a row? It’s just part of what you do. And it’s very fluid. I mean just because you win one particular weekend doesn’t mean you’re going to win the next. And just because you lose doesn’t mean you’re going to continue losing.”

“You just have to refocus and move forward. The boys have done that throughout the year,” said Corbin. “We played a very difficult schedule to even start off with before we got into the SEC. So they have been surrounded by good competition and resistance. This was just another step in this season that we have here.”

Vanderbilt faced adversity again to start their run in Hoover. After handling Auburn in their opener, the Commodores dropped their fourth straight contest against Florida in two weeks.

That’s when things flipped for Vandy. From Friday to Sunday’s title game, Corbin’s team completed their mission by ripping off three wins, including a revenge game against the Gators, by a combined score of 30-12.

Vanderbilt got hot at the right time in order to secure the conference crown. However, Corbin didn’t buy into their skid which, in turn, means he won’t be subscribing to anything from this weekend’s run either. He believes it’ll be a blank slate for them once again once things get going for them in the Nashville Regional on Friday against Eastern Illinois.
