In the year since Virginia Tech offered Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Gulliver Prep three-star quarterback Davi Belfort, he’s been in constant contact with the Hokies coaching staff. Talking up to three times a week, Belfort’s also visited Blacksburg twice with the latest coming on Jan. 21.

That relationship-building paid off in a big way Wednesday as Belfort, the son of former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, committed to the Hokies over Michigan State and Texas A&M.

He is the first commitment in Virginia Tech’s 2024 recruiting class.

“From the first time I stepped on campus there, it felt different,” Belfort told On3. “I was there for the first time in November and I find of knew then. It just felt like the place for me.

“God told me that was the place. I kept thinking about it and taking visits, but I knew it. The way I felt with the way they recruited me just made a big difference.”

The No. 569 overall prospect and No. 33 quarterback in the 2024 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, Belfort acknowledged that at one time his decision ultimately was tied between Virginia Tech and Michigan State.

By the time early March had come though, Belfort said that he knew where he was going to commit.

“What really set Virginia Tech apart was the family vibe,” Belfort said. “I don’t know how else to describe what it is like up there. I just clicked with the coaches and the players right away and it was easy. That family vibe is what put them over the top.”

Belfort’s closeness to coaching staff the deciding factor

Virginia Tech finalized its staff a week ago and Belfort said that he reached out to let them know about his decision. Two days ago is when he said he made it official.

“I told them I was committed and it was a great vibe and great energy with the coaches,” Belfort said. “It felt right. They knew they were in the lead, but they were so excited. It was a great feeling.”

Of the coaches on Virginia Tech’s staff, Belfort noted that his relationship with head coach Brent Pry and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tyler Bowen are the two that have stood out to him the most.

Belfort’s met with Pry and on top of being the type of coach he wanted to play for, he really loved Pry’s love for his family, God and overall values. He also noted that Bowen said he reminds him of former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley and that it really excited him to hear that type of comparison.

“I can’t wait to get up there,” Belfort said. “Coach Pry is building something and I love what he is doing. “He has Virginia Tech moving up and I can’t wait to be part of the program, start recruiting and become a leader for this class.”
