Devin Farrell’s recruitment is over, and Virginia Tech has its quarterback for the 2022 cycle. As a result, Farrell’s phone has been quiet. Farrell committed to the Hokies back on Feb. 11 over Duke, Buffalo, Georgia Tech and Coastal Carolina.

Farrell has limited his travel schedule to family trips and Milton High School workouts.

That’s how the star quarterback wants it.

“I haven’t been talking to any other schools, so I’m 100% committed to Virginia Tech,” Farrell said.

Farrell enters his senior season at the helm of a team that expects to compete for a state championship in the largest classification in Georgia.

Winning and leading Milton is the focus for Farrell. Having fun is also high on his list of things to do during his senior season.

That is a stark opposition from the beginning of last year. Back then, Farrell was hoping for a season. The COVID-19 pandemic had the football season in doubt at this point last year.

In addition to that worry, Farrell was playing to build himself as a college prospect. Those pressures are behind Farrell now.

“It’s about having fun and letting it all loose,” Farrell said. “Last year, I was trying to get my offers up and get schools to look at me. Now, I’m committed, and I’ve found a home. I’m ready to just have fun this year.”

In his time at Milton, Farrell has grown as a leader. The program has leadership groups aimed at teaching players how to sharpen their leadership skillsets. Farrell feels he’s evolved every year of his high school career in that category.

“I think I’ve developed well,” Farrell said. “We have leadership groups for Milton, and I’ve been a part of it ever since I came here in my sophomore year. I’ve been able to grow as a leader and develop as a football as a whole.”

The leadership role doesn’t stop at Milton for the Class of 2022 quarterback. Farrell is the only quarterback committed to Virginia Tech in the class of 2022. He has taken responsibility on his shoulders to be a recruiter for the Hokies.

Farrell takes the role seriously.

Virginia Tech has already landed 18 commitments in the 2022 class. As a result, much of the convincing of uncommitted stars may be finished. There is still work that Farrell and other members of the class can do to reassure one another on their pledges. Two of Farrell’s teammates, Jack Nickel and Maurice Clipper, considered and visited Virginia Tech on June 11 before committing elsewhere.

Nickel committed to Michigan State on July 8. Clipper committed to Tennessee on July 10.

“I take it (being a leader in the class) as a big deal,” Farrell said. “I’m a quarterback first and I’m a leader first. I’ve been reaching out to as many people as possible to get them to come to Virginia Tech. I tried to get my teammates to VT as well.”

Once the 2021 high school football season concludes, Farrell plans on enrolling at Virginia Tech early in hopes of grasping the playbook and competing for playing time early in his career.
