Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister only completed one pass in the Hokies’ first two drives, but he made it count, finding Tre Turner with room to run.

Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech exchanged punts on the first two drives of the game, but on the third drive, Burmeister and Turner broke the game’s seal. First, Burmeister ran for a 15-yard pickup to start the drive; then, an incomplete pass and two-yard rush set up a third-and-8 for the Hokies. Burmeister dropped back and faked a wide receiver screen, which got the Georgia Tech defense to bite — in the process, they left Turner wide open down the field.

Following the pump fake, Burmeister looked deep down the field and completed a pass to Turner, who was already on the opposing 40-yard line and past the last line of Georgia Tech defense.

Turner took the catch 69 yards for a Virginia Tech touchdown, giving the Hokies a 7-0 lead.

Georgia Tech quickly responded, however, as the Yellow Jackets strung together a nine-play, 75-yard drive to equalize the game at seven apiece.

At the time of publication, Burmeister has completed two of his four passing attempts for 95 passing yards and a Virginia Tech touchdown. Both of his completions have been to Turner, who has two receptions for 95 yards and the long touchdown catch. Burmeister also rushed once for 15 yards, and Raheem Blackshear added 13 rushing yards on three carries, while Malachi Thomas leads Virginia Tech rushers with seven carries for 22 rushing yards.

For Georgia Tech, quarterback Jeff Sims has completed four of his five passing attempts for 33 yards and a passing touchdown, while Jahmyr Gibbs leads the Georgia Tech backfield with four carries for 28 rushing yards.

Burmeister, Turner and the Virginia Tech Hokies, now 3-4, were underdogs on the road against Georgia Tech, as the 3-4 Yellow Jackets were four-point underdogs.
