The Washington Huskies are set to square off with one of the nation’s best college basketball programs during the 2022-2023 college basketball season. Per college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Washington is set to tangle with the Gonzaga Bulldogs–a team that is expected to once again compete for the national crown. Per Rothstein, the game is slated to be played on Friday, Dec. 9th in Spokane, Washington.

Gonzaga just recently raided the transfer portal and landed Chattanooga transfer Malachi Smith. Last season for Chattanooga, Smith averaged 19.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. He joins an incredibly stacked roster that features the likes of: Drew Timme (18.4 points per game), Julian Strawther (11.8 points per game), Rasir Bolton (11.2 points per game), Anton Watson (7.3 points per game), Nolan Hickman (5.1 points per game), Hunter Salis and others.

Timme recently made the wise decision to withdraw from the 2022 NBA Draft and he once again figures to be one of the best big men in America. Last season, Malachi Smith guided the Chattanooga Mocs to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. He led the Southern Conference in scoring and figures to be an essential ingredient on a national championship caliber roster.

Washington is still currently in the mix to land former Kentucky power forward Keion Brooks, Jr., a player that is ranked as the No. 40 overall prospect currently remaining in the transfer portal by On3. Washington recently added Franck Kepnang of the Oregon Ducks from the transfer portal. The 6-11 native of Cameroon averaged just over a block a game last year for the Ducks and figures to be a solid defensive presence in the painted area for the Huskies. Kepnang poured in a career-high 17 points against Arizona State and also blocked a season-high four shots three different times last year.

Washington also added two other players from the transfer portal this offseason–former Washington State guard Noah Williams and former Fresno State center Braxton Meah.

One of the most highly acclaimed prospects coming into the Washington program is without a doubt, Koren Johnson, a three-star point guard who was rated as the No. 137 overall prospect in America, according to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2022 recruiting class. He played at Garfied High School (Seattle, Washington) and led his team to the 2020 Class 3A state championship under former Huskie great Brandon Roy. In the shortened 2021 season, Johnson stuffed the stat sheet with 28 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game.
