Round Rock (Texas) three-star safety Jalen Gilbert decommitted from Washington State on Wednesday morning. He was previously committed to the Cougars since July 31.

Gilbert is the No. 1,086 overall prospect and No. 98 safety in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 196 player in Texas.

On3 rates him higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Even though he is not ranked in the 2023 On300, Gilbert is the No. 58 safety and No. 107 player in Texas.

“My dream has always been to play college football and Wazzu was the first to make that a possibility,” Gilbert wrote in a statement published to social media. “I am very thankful to Coach Malone, and the entire Wazzu community for taking a chance on a kid coming out of Round Rock, Texas! As I’ve gone through the recruiting process I’ve grown so much and learned a lot about myself. With the love and support of my family and mentors I have made the tough decision to decommit from Washington State. I am forever grateful for the support of Coach Malone, the players and the Wazzu staff and I wish the program nothing but the best in the future.”

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back, Gilbert holds five offers. Four of them are from Power Five Schools, including Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Washington State and West Virginia.

The Cougars’ 2023 recruiting class — which now contains 13 prospects — is led by Portland (Ore.) Pleasant Grove three-star quarterback Sam Leavitt, the No. 829 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus. Washington State’s group currently ranks No. 69 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 10 in the Pac-12.

Gilbert has an On3 NIL Valuation of $5.9K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
