As a College Recruit

Physically gifted EDGE prospect with high-end upside. Prototype frame and build for an edge rusher. Looks college ready now as a junior in high school. Athleticism jumps off the screen. Extremely comfortable in space and can run with receivers downfield. Quality bend and flexibility off the edge during pass rush. Totaled 77 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 8 sacks during his junior season. Played as an off-ball linebacker often and posted a very high sack rate in limited pass rush opportunities. Jumped just shy of 19 feet in the long jump and an impressive 45 feet in the triple jump during his junior track and field season. Solid hand usage and ability to strike his opponent first. Needs to refine his ability to disengage when blockers are latched on. Will develop a wider arsenal of pass rush moves with continued experience collegiate coaching. Potential is through the roof. One of the higher upsides in the country due to physical build and athletic ability. One of the younger edge defenders in the 2023 recruiting cycle turning 17 years old in the summer prior to his senior season.

Braylan Shelby's high-end frame, length, functional athleticism and developmental upside remind us of Danielle Hunter. Both hail from Houston and bear striking resemblances at the same stage. Like Hunter, Shelby has the upside to develop into a long, fluid pass rusher off the edge. Shelby may end up being a bigger college player than Hunter.

USC EDGE commit Braylan Shelby checks in at No. 33 overall. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder owns a high-end combination of size, fluidity and quick-twitch athleticism that points to a high upside. Shelby often played as an off-ball linebacker in his career at Friendswood (Texas) High, but was highly productive and disruptive in pass rush opportunities.

The Houston-area prospect is getting bigger, stronger and faster with rapid development. An impressive spring and summer has resulted in a leap to No. 101 from No. 254 in the prior ranking. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder has ideal length and twitch and improved his physicality on tape as a junior. He will take on more of an edge rush role as a senior. His athletic ability carried over to the track as well. He was a regional qualifier in the triple jump in the spring at over 45 feet.
