As a College Recruit

A lean, functional mover with explosive power as a drive blocker. Has played both center and left tackle at the high school level, but projects inside long-term. A nimble mover who gets to the second level with ease. Also shows good feet in pass protection. Has backed up his athleticism on the track with a shot put toss over 50 feet. Plays with a high effort level and works to finish blocks to the whistle. Keeps his feet moving once engaged. Plays with some nasty physicality. Helped his team to back-to-back state title appearances and has proven to be very reliable. Not overly long, hence the projection to the interior.

Joey Tanona works as an offensive tackle at the high school level but projects as an interior lineman, likely at center. Like Ryan Kelly, Tanona has a streamlined build with room to add weight once in college. Both were technical, physical players at the high school level.

Joey Tanona impresses in state title game

Charles Power

Joey Tanona lined up at left tackle for his Zionsville (Ind.) High team in the Indiana 5A state championship against Indianapolis Cathedral. Tanona showed effort to the whistle as a drive blocker. He drove his man out of the screen’s view on several occasions. The Irish pledge also moved to the second level with ease. We didn’t see him give up a pressure in pass protection. Tanona is not overly long and projects along the interior at the next level – likely at center given his prior experience at the position.
