As a College Recruit

Big bodied pocket passer with a bunch of arm strength. Among the bigger quarterback prospects in the 2022 cycle. Entered his senior year with little varsity experience, not starting until his junior season which was shortened due to the COVID-19 rescheduling. Has a plus arm with the ability to drive the ball downfield without strain. Showed some continued improvement as a senior. Still undeveloped in terms of live game reps. Does not offer much of a run threat but will need to improve his mobility at the next level as he can tend to be stationary at times.

Maalik Murphy mid-season evaluation

Charles Power

Maalik Murphy committed to Texas before becoming a full-time varsity starter, so the fact he's a developmental quarterback should not be a huge surprise. We saw Murphy get his first extended action at Gardena (Calif.) Serra during California's shortened spring season. While he's currently out with an injury, what we've seen this fall from Murphy is similar to the spring. The arm strength is among the best in the class. Murphy is among the bigger quarterbacks in the 2022 cycle and can generate a bunch of force with the football. He's still developing as an overall quarterback and has limited live reps. There's no question he'll need time and will benefit from scout team work once he gets to college. Murphy moves adequately at best and is not a run threat who will need to continue improving his mobility.

Maalik Murphy shows arm strength at Elite 11 Finals

Charles Power

Maalik Murphy’s skill set as a big, strong-armed pocket passer was on display at the Elite 11 Finals. He has one of the strongest arms in the nation and is able to generate a bunch of zip while driving the ball downfield when everything is aligned. Murphy saw a bit of a dip in his play in 7-on-7. He’s more of a stationary passer at this point and will benefit from continued live 11-on-11 reps against a pass rush – something he hasn’t had much exposure to with a limited spring season in 2021.
