Justin Simmons and Will Johnson both are 6-foot-3 defensive backs who showed high-end ball skills while lining up at safety and receiver. They also both played basketball – Simmons averaged a double-double at Stuart (Fla.) Martin County as a 2012 prospect. Simmons ultimately settled in as a safety at Boston College before becoming one of the better players at the position in the NFL. It remains unseen where Johnson will end in the secondary up long-term.

Will Johnson a top performer at Under Armour All-America Game

Charles Power

Will Johnson‘s impressive week of practice carried over to the game Sunday. We thought he was the best corner for Team Legends throughout practice. Not only does he possesses tremendous size at corner, but his ability to break on the ball is top shelf. When the opportunities are presented, he displays natural plucker ball skills on defense. The Michigan signee flashed the ability to play press or off coverage with equal success this week. He stayed attached at all three levels and used his combination of length and leverage understanding to get off blocks in the run game. Position versatility is another strength of the On3 Consensus 4-star. He could play anywhere in the secondary, especially early on to get on the field quickest

Will Johnson Scouting Summary

Charles Power

Possesses tremendous stature at the cornerback position with a high-end frame. Among the bigger cornerback prospects in a strong group at the position nationally. A legitimate top 100 level prospect at defensive back or wide receiver. A smooth mover in his backpedal and when changing directions. Stays attached in coverage. Game moves slow for Johnson. Plays more at safety than other spots on defense, but projects as a boundary corner. Doubles as a playmaking receiver with make-you-miss ability after the catch. Naturally plucks the football at its highest point. Shows burst and acceleration after the catch, initially running away from defenders. Does not have verified speed or athletic testing numbers. With that said, his play speed doesn’t appear to be a big concern. Putting up big numbers on both sides of the ball as a senior. Overall athleticism carries over to the basketball court where he also excels.
