No. 1 Texas A&M becomes NCAA softball's first top seed to lose in Regionals after Liberty shocker

Liberty had a lot to do today to even have a chance to pull the all-time upset on Sunday in the College Station Regional. However, after a chance in the first game before a winner-take-all game tonight, the Flames completed the comeback over No. 1 Texas A&M.
With a 6-5 win in the final game this evening, and now of the season, at Davis Diamond, Liberty eliminated Texas A&M, the No. 1 overall seed in the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament. The Flames will now advance to their first-ever Super Regional, to face one of Oregon or Stanford out west, while the Aggies become the first-ever No. 1 seed to not advance past their Regional since seeding began in the bracket two decades ago in 2005.
Liberty beat Texas A&M on Saturday too at 8-5 by coming back with five runs in the sixth inning. That loss forced the host team and top overall seed to have to come out of the elimination bracket.
However, in their first game this afternoon, the Aggies survived a classic between the two with a 14-11 win in extras. A&M came back from six down early with a ten-run advantage from the third through the fifth. That looked to be enough before the Flames nearly came back to achieve this earlier today with four runs in the bottom of the seventh with the final hit flying out to strand the winning run rather than scoring it. That sent it to eight with three runs scored by Texas A&M being enough to get to tonight.

Again, though, Liberty never went away. The Flames were down two to three runs for the duration of the final game before yet another five-run sixth inning this weekend gave them the lead in doubling up the Aggies. A&M tried to come back with two runs in the fifth and getting the winning run up to the plate in the sixth but, in the end, two outs and a strikeout ended the historic outcome tonight down in Aggieland.
Liberty will now await the winner of the opposite regional to determine whether they’re head to Eugene or Stanford for their program’s debut in the Super Regionals. Texas A&M will then try to move on from this historic loss that ended the season that earned them their first-ever No. 1 seed.
