Arizona high school football season heads into the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Open Division state championship game with the most change the state has seen all season long at the top.

Hamilton has been knocked off as the No. 1 team in the Grand Canyon State after a surprising loss to No. 4 Chandler, 30-17, in the AIA Open Division semifinals. Now Chandler will square off with new No. 1 Basha for Arizona’s Open Division state title. Who else joins the aforementioned teams in the latest set of Arizona high school football Top 25 rankings?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Arizona high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Dec. 2.

1. Basha Bears

Basha (11-1) are back in a position to win the state’s AIA Open Division state championship after beating No. 2 Liberty, 19-16, a rematch of last year’s state title game.

Now the Bears will square off against No. 4 ranked Chandler on Saturday night for all of the marbles, with the state now heading in going to crown a new state champion.

The Bears may have come up short last year in their quest to win a second Open Division crown in three years, but this team has a chance to be back in the AIA Open Division title game with a win this week. The Bears opened up the 2025 season off with impressive wins over Brophy College Prep, California powerhouse Orange Lutheran and Williams Field.

Quarterback Broderick Vehrs has led a talented Basha offense which features four-star sophomore running back Noah Roberts, three-star wide receiver Jaden Baldwin and four-star offensive tackle Jake Hildebrand. The team’s defensive unit is led by Mason Lewis and linebacker Eli Cramer-Cronin.

2. Liberty Lions

Liberty (10-2) continues to maintain their No. 2 ranking despite losing to top-ranked Basha, 19-16, in the Open Division semifinals. The Lions only other loss on the season came against Utah’s Corner Canyon, a 45-14 decision.

For previous eight straight weeks before the loss to Basha, the Lions have double-digit victories over Brophy College PreparatoryHighland, winless ALA Queen Creek, Mountain Ridge, Centennial, Boulder Creek and Red Mountain, respectively.

Liberty featured players like Boise State commit Paz St. John and Minnesota pledge Hudson Dunn that led the charge for the Lions’ defense.

3. Hamilton Huskies

The Hamilton Huskies (11-1) saw its season end at the hands of No. 4 Chandler, 30-17, in the second round of the AIA Open Division playoffs.

Hamilton’s title-drought now stands at 13 years after falling in back-to-back years in the Open Division semifinals. Among the standouts on the season for the Huskies has been a number of contributors, including Sculley (2,947 yards, 41 touchdowns), running back Skyler Cole (921 yards, eight touchdowns) and four-star sophomore wide receiver Roye Oliver, who finished the season catching nearly 100 passes for 1,839 yards and 29 scores.

Oliver has put himself into the record books, becoming the all-time single season leader for touchdown grabs in Arizona’s Class 6A with 29.

4. Chandler Wolves

The one team the Chandler Wolves (10-2) have not seen this season is Basha, which they will square off with on Saturday night for the AIA Open Division state championship.

What setup the opportunity for the Wolves was when they upset previous No. 1 Hamilton, 30-17, last week in the semifinals.

Quarterback Will Mencl is one of the best junior quarterbacks in Arizona, and he’ll have a pair of standout targets at receiver in Jai Jones and Kaydon Gray. Veteran safety Hamisi Juma, who committed to Arizona last September, will anchor the team’s defensive secondary.

5. Centennial Coyotes

It hasn’t been exactly like last year’s road to the Class 6A state championship, as Centennial (9-4) saw their regular season end with a loss to Mountain View, 22-14.

That hasn’t deterred the Coyotes whatsoever on making another run back as the handily defeated ALA Queen Creek last week, 35-23, and now take on Casteel for the 6A crown this Saturday afternoon.

This team got hot at the right time last year, winning their first state crown since 2018. Centennial saw that magic happen in 2024 and it’s happening again as the team looks to repeat as state champions.
