Final California High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Dec. 1
The 2025 California high school football season comes to a close as it crowns its champions. That said, here’s how the state’s best teams fared in the last Massey Ratings this year.
The Massey Ratings system, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, the strength of their schedule, and the margin of victory.
1. Mater Dei Monarchs
The Monarchs still finished the season as California high school football’s best team despite losing three games. That’s an uncharacteristic number, considering they lost only three games from 2019 to 2024. Rebuilding their aura of invincibility must be Mater Dei’s priority until their next campaign.
2. St. John Bosco Braves
The Braves started strong, winning their first nine games this season. Some of those victories were against Maryland’s St. Frances Academy, Hawaii’s St. Louis, Santa Margarita Catholic, and Servite. However, St. John Bosco’s promising campaign ended in heartbreaking victories against Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran. While the Braves came up short, they finished their year 24th in the National Massey Ratings.
3. Santa Margarita Catholic Eagles
The Eagles defeated Centennial on November 28 to capture the California high school football Division 1 Southern Section championship. Trace Johnson threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns, while Trent Mosley had 11 catches for 293 yards, two receiving touchdowns, and two rushing scores. Meanwhile, Isaia Vandermade had three of Santa Margarita Catholic’s seven sacks. This victory improved the Eagles’ record to 10-3.
4. Centennial Huskies
The Huskies showed promise after losing Mater Dei twice. However, they lost twice to the same team. Worst yet, Centennial scored only seven points in their second loss to Santa Margarita Catholic, a disappointing finish to a team that dominated in their victories, as proven by three victories in which they scored at least 60 points.
5. Mission Viejo Diablos
The Diablos finished the 2025 California high school football season with their worst performance, scoring zero points against Mater Dei. Mission Viejo closed its campaign with a 9-2 record.
