Gustavo Varela becomes Massachusetts high school football all-time rushing leader

6,746. That’s the new number that Massachusetts high school football running backs will look to strive towards when it comes to taking over the record books as the all-time leading rusher.

On Thanksgiving Eve, Greater Lawrence senior running back Gustavo Varela was able to accomplish the feat of being atop of Massachusetts’ leaderboard of rushers, breaking a record that has stood for 30 years.

In Varela’s final high school football game, the running back carried the rock 21 times for 144 yards, bringing his career rushing total to 6,746, which surpassed that of former Holyoke tailback Cedric Washington (6,688 yards). Varela broke the record in helping Greater Lawrence pull off a comeback victory over Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School in a 45-40 thriller.

Now Varela stands alone atop of the Massachusetts high school football record books as the state’s leading rusher, doing it just before Thanksgiving Day.

The running back was one of multiple players to be resetting the record books right around Turkey Day as Leominster quarterback Osiris Lopez, a Coastal Carolina commit, became the new all-time record holder for touchdown passes in Massachusetts’ state history with 123, breaking the record that’s stood since 2016.

Lopez had surpassed the previous record of 122 previously held by Duxbury‘s Bobby Maimaron (2013-2016).
