Kentucky High School Football Playoffs: Controversial call sends Boyle Co. to title game
One of the biggest high school football games of the season in Kentucky ended in controversy on Friday night.
Boyle County, the No. 4 team in the commonwealth — per the Massey Ratings — hosted No. 14 Corbin in the KHSAA 4A playoff semifinals. Boyle Co. held a 34-33 lead with a little over three minutes to go in the fourth quarter and had possession just past midfield.
A fumbled snap saw the Rebels’ quarterback dive for the loose ball, but he was unable to come up with it as the Corbin defense swarmed and looked to recover. The Redhounds would’ve had a prime opportunity inside Boyle Co. territory, but that didn’t happen.
While the Rebels’ QB was diving for the ball, an official blew his whistle far too early and signaled for the clock to continue rolling. Meanwhile, another official had signaled possession in favor of Corbin once it had actually recovered the ball.
The officials got together and ruled that it was still Boyle Co. ball due to the play being blown dead by the early whistle. The unfortunate error led to a 34-33 win for the Rebels and nothing but heartbreak for the Redhounds.

Corbin’s season ends at 10-4. The fumble and early whistle will be talking points in the 606 for years to come.
