Mount Carmel HC Jordan Lynch sounds off on Illinois public/private debate
The never ending private/public school debate rages on around the country when it pertains to high school sports and one of Illinois more well known head coaches spoke out on it in a recent Illinois High School Association (IHSA) news conference.
The IHSA will host eight state championship high school football games on Friday and Saturday at Hancock Stadium. Illinois’ highest classification, Class 8A, is set to pit 16-time state champion Mount Carmel (13-0) against Oswego (11-2), in the state championship bout.
According to the Massey Ratings, the prediction is the Caravan will run away with the 8A title by the score of 42-12. Mount Carmel has won the most state titles of any football program in the state and their head coach Jordan Lynch, who is in his eighth season at the helm and aiming to win his fifth, sounded off on the private/public debate when it comes schools.
‘‘Everyone has it tough,’’ Lynch said via a report. ‘‘There are pros and cons to every school. At the end of the day, look at yourself in the mirror. If you didn’t win or you are just not good enough, accept that. Stop looking for excuses. It’s kind of getting exhausting.’’
Oswego head coach Brian Cooney was asked the very same question, according to the report, and had a different tone regarding the Illinois private/public comparison.

‘‘I’m proud of our kids. I’m proud of our community. If you are gonna live inside these boundaries, we are going to love you hard but coach you hard. I’m looking forward to this opportunity on Saturday with our kids,” Cooney said.
The Mount Carmel-Oswego matchup is the final game of the IHSA state finals, slated to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday night.
