New Jersey High School Football: DePaul Catholic repeats as NJSIAA Non-Public B champs
When it comes to New Jersey high school football quarterbacks, there’s not many that can stack up to the talents and toughness of Washington commit Derek Zammit for DePaul Catholic.
On Friday morning at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, the future Husky showed why he’s going to be a problem on the collegiate level with not just his arm, but with his legs. Zammit, not at one hundred percent, scored three rushing touchdowns and led the Spartans to a 21-12 win over Paramus Catholic for the NJSIAA Non-Public B state championship. With the victory, DePaul Catholic secured its 12th state title in program history.
What was impressive about Zammit’s performance was the senior did it all on a bad ankle, but was able to run for touchdowns of 1, 69 and 22 yards on the dais.
Zammit silenced any question marks about his availability heading into the contest past the midway point of the opening quarter when he scored on a 1-yard plunge to put DePaul Catholic ahead 7-0. The senior signal caller wasn’t done in the opening period as he rumbled into the endzone on a 22-yard run to exit the quarter up 14-0.

After heading into halftime up 14-0, Zammit added his third touchdown on his most impressive run of the morning, this one being a 69-yard scamper.
Paramus Catholic wouldn’t go away quietly, however, as junior running back Chukwuma Odoh scored on a 1-yard run with 4:37 remaining in the third. The Paladins added another touchdown early in the fourth when backup quarterback Marco Green connected with Odoh on a 7-yard touchdown pass to cut the Spartans’ lead to nine.
