Pennsylvania High School Football: La Salle College High wins 6A title
For what had eluded the La Salle College Explorers a year ago is now in hand this time around at the PIAA Pensylvania high school football state championships.
The Explorers received a stellar defensive performance from Notre Dame signee Joey O’Brien en route to a 34-20 win over Pittsburgh Central Catholic at Chapman Field in Mechanicsburg for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class 6A state championship. For La Salle College, it’s only their second state title in program history, with the other coming in 2009.
O’Brien ended the night intercepting three passes for the Explorers, also taking one of them back to the house 84 yards in capping the scoring on the night for La Salle College.
The future Fighting Irish athlete wasn’t just making plays on the defensive side of the ball, but offensively as well. O’Brien in the third quarter threw a touchdown pass as well, in helping the Explorers build a 21-7 advantage over Central Catholic.
Don’t think we can talk about La Salle College without mentioning the efforts of quarterback Gavin Sidwar (Missouri signee), who finished the night with two touchdown passes.

Sidwar ends his Pennsylvania high school football playing days being able to hoist a state championship trophy that eluded him a year ago. It was a season of checking off the boxes and getting revenge from the 2024 campaign as the Explorers were able to take out St. Joseph’s Prep, the team that La Salle lost to last year in district tournament, early in the postseason.
Capping the season with a state championship and likely a No. 1 ranking in the state of Pennsylvania is all just the proverbial cherry and whip cream on top to what has been a phenomenal 2025 campaign for the Explorers.
