CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- For the 11th straight year in a row, the Alcoa Tornadoes are Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) state champions.

The Tornadoes raced out to a three-score advantage by halftime and never looked back as they cruised to a 47-27 victory over Pearl-Cohn Saturday afternoon for the BlueCross Bowl Class 4A state championship at Finley Stadium.

According to MaxPreps, the only two other teams that the Tornadoes trail all-time when it comes to consecutive state championships are Hawaii’s St. Louis (1986-1999) and South Dakota’s Washington (1951-1964) with 14 in a row.

Alcoa (14-1) started off fast with two touchdowns right out of the gates on a 45-yard run by running back Micah Jones (120 yards, four touchdowns) and then a 3-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by linebacker Cade Stinnett.

Pearl-Cohn (9-5) finally answered back when quarterback Josef Funk (241 yards, four touchdowns) fired a 13-yard strike to Ladamion Hunter for a score, to cut the lead to 14-7. That would be the closest the Firebirds would get within all game long as the Tornadoes started to a scoring onslaught in the second period that ballooned the lead from seven to 19 by intermission.

The second quarter would end on a 18-yard touchdown run by Jones, his third rushing score of the first half and giving Alcoa a 33-14 advantage. Jones was named the game’s most valuable player.
