Texas High School Football: Hemphill head coach Brandon Layne resigns

Following a 1-9 season this fall, Hemphill football will have a new head coach next fall.
According to DCTF’s Matt Stepp, Brandon Layne has resigned from his position as head coach of the Hornets. He was hired by Hemphill ISD in February of 2024 but is now set to head elsewhere after two seasons.
The Hornets also went 1-9 in 2024. This season saw the team eat myriad lopsided losses. They were held scoreless in five games and reached double-digits just three times. Their lone win came on Sept. 26 when they drubbed KIPP Houston 57-8.
Layne came to Hemphill from Redwater, where he was the head coach for three seasons. The Dragons went 11-19 under Layne and never surpassed four wins in a season.
The Texas high school football playoffs are about to get underway, and for the slew of teams that didn’t make the postseason, coaching changes are en route. Layne is one of the first few dominoes to fall as we near mid-November. Earlier this week, longtime Weslaco East head coach Mike Burget announced that he was retiring after 13 seasons.
