Southlake Carroll is just one step away from returning to the UIL Class 6A, Division II state championship game, but the Dragons had to overcome early adversity before moving onto the state semifinal round.

The Dragons shrugged off an early 13-7 deficit and came back to score 38 unanswered points to roll past a feisty Guyer team 51-19 on Saturday afternoon at Dragon Stadium in a Class 6A, Division II state quarterfinal.

For the second week in a row, Southlake Carroll had to stave off another slow start. Guyer opened up the game with a defensive stop and capped it off with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back Kaedyn Marble in the first quarter.

The Dragons answered right back with a score of their own when Pittsburgh signee Angelo Renda connected with Ohio State signee Brock Boyd on a 74-yard touchdown to put Southlake Carroll up, 7-6.

The Wildcats responded with a 40-yard scoring run by Carter Morgan and regained the lead at 13-7. It wasn’t too long after that when Southlake Carroll head coach Riley Dodge went into his offensive bag of tricks, calling a flea flicker pass, giving the Dragons the 14-13 lead.

From that point forward, the Southlake Carroll avalanche of points began as the Dragons added two touchdowns via runs of seven and 19 by running back Brooks Biggers. The Dragons took a commanding 28-13 lead going into halftime and continued to apply pressure in the latter two quarters.
