Texas High School Football Playoffs: Summer Creek stuns Katy with game-winning TD pass
There’s always madness in the Texas high school football playoffs and Summer Creek delivered quite the helping of drama on Friday.
With less than 30 seconds to play in their third-round matchup in the UIL 6A Division II playoffs, Summer Creek junior quarterback Noah Spinks dropped back to pass on 4th and 8 at the Katy 25-yard-line with the Bulldogs trailing 37-31.
After evading pressure and rolling out to the right, Spinks looked to the middle of the field and found Trenton Thomas, who was running across the 11. Seemingly amidst a sea of Katy defenders, none of the four Tigers were able to stop the receiver, who bolted upfield and into the end zone for the unbelievable score:
Katy built a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but Summer Creek sliced the lead in half via a kickoff return from junior Texas Tech commit Benny Easter Jr.
The game was tied at 28 in the third quarter after Spinks fired a touchdown pass to junior Braylin Causey. The Bulldogs then took a 31-28 lead into the fourth quarter after a field goal. The Tigers answered with a field goal to tie things up again, setting up an exciting few minutes.

Summer Creek extended a drive via a fake punt, but was stopped on fourth and short later in the drive, turning it over. Katy then struck with a play-action pass as junior QB Mason Hartwell delivered a dime to a wide-open receiver for a big score. The Tigers would miss the extra point, however, which of course proved costly.
The Bulldogs then drove down the field and the heroics from Spinks and Thomas ensued. The win propels Summer Creek into the quarterfinals, where it’ll take on C.E. King, which dispatched of Jordan 52-0 on Friday.
Summer Creek entered as the No. 8 team in Texas, according to the Massey Ratings. It is now 12-1 on the season. Katy, the No. 39 team in the Lone Star State, has its 10-game winning streak snapped and finishes with a 10-3 record this season.
