Woodstock poses with the championship trophy after winning the Division III high school football championship at St. Johnsbury Academy on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024.

The Vermont high school football season kicked off back on Aug. 29, but now the season heads into its final weekend of the three state championship games taking place at South Burlington High School.

The top two teams, St. Johnsbury Academy and Middlebury Union, meet this weekend in Burlington for Vermont’s Division I state championship. Here’s how the Massey Ratings ranked Vermont’s Top 25 high school football teams heading into the state’s final three games of the 2025 season.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Vermont high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 11.

1. St. Johnsbury Academy Hilltoppers (9-1)

When it comes to Vermont high school football’s top team, St. Johnsbury Academy has been the state’s best throughout the course of this 2025 season. The Hilltoppers have been a dominant force throughout this past season and averaging 37.5 points per game, capping it off with a trip to the VPA Division I state championship against No. 2 Middlebury (see below) this week. St. Johnsbury Academy was able to avenge a regular season loss to Rutland Senior by defeating them in last week’s state semifinal, 33-13.

2. Middlebury Union Tigers (9-1)

Middlebury Union last season was a team all throughout 2024 that proved themselves to be a serious contender for the Division I state championship and now has a chance to cap this season off with a title. Evidence that would prove that Middlebury could hang with top-ranked St. Johnsbury Academy is two victories over Burr And Burton Academy, including last week’s state semifinal win. The Tigers throughout the season has played with renewed energy defensively towards making a run behind a defense that is only yielding around 13 points per game.

3. Hartford Hurricanes (9-1)

The Hartford Hurricanes were right on the cusp of being in this week’s Division II state championship game, only to be upended by Fair Haven Union, 14-13, a team they beat by 33 at the beginning of the season. Now the Hurricanes began our Vermont high school football Top 25 rankings at No. 3, and will likely finish in the same position as their hopes of bringing hope a state title will have to wait another year.

4. Rutland Senior Raiders (5-4)

The Vermont high school football Division I state runner-ups from a year ago take the fourth spot after falling as they saw their season end last week at the hands of St. Johnsbury Academy, 33-13. The Raiders were the only team to hand the Hilltoppers a loss this 2025 season. Though Rutland Senior‘s season has officially come to a close, there’s some key players that will be returning in 2026, including junior quarterback Giovanni Spallieri, who was a main cog in the Rutland offensive attack.

5. Burr And Burton Academy Bulldog (5-4)

Rounding out the Top 5 of these Vermont high school football rankings are the Burr And Burton Academy, which saw its season end last week in the Division I state semifinals in a 27-7 loss to Middlebury Union. After a string 4-1 start to the season, it was the latter end that hurt the Bulldogs as they finished 3-2 in their final five games.
