For obvious reasons, the story centers on Cignetti and May - but nice shoutout of McCollum in this piece:
While many coaches around the country have wasted time complaining about the new world order, the Big Ten has attracted a lot of early adopters.
Back in 2023, then-Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh seemed like a contrarian when he said the transfer portal was fine as it is. While his national title team was largely homegrown, he identified key transfers to plug some holes. Much like Ohio State’s Ryan Day did the next year. Also, early on board and winning big: Oregon’s Dan Lanning. Meanwhile, Iowa hired a basketball coach, Ben McCollum, who took practically his entire team from Drake and reached the Elite Eight.
Conversely, there’s been a lot more whining and griping in the Southeast, where they got used to stockpiling elite recruits and beating people’s brains in. Alabama’s Nick Saban detested NIL so much that he retired. Clemson resister Dabo Swinney has driven his program into the ground. LSU’s Brian Kelly proclaimed, “We’re not in the market of buying players” in 2024 and was out of a job by the end of 2025.

Kirk Ferentz deserves a salute 👏🏽 on the football side for his ability to adapt and this offseason may have been his best example of using the portal coming in at #20 in the portal transfer ratings by ESPN's Bill Connelly.
🤔 "perhaps the most intriguing part is, although all were productive in the FCS, none is a senior. There's still some developmental potential here."
And, the MBB side, Ben McCollum's first-year hit high marks too 👏🏽
Well done, Big Ten ✌️ Iowa trending 📈

Now money can get spent legally, so guys don't think it's worth it to go get paid at a SEC school under the table and wait 2 years to play when they can go play sooner and get paid out in the open. You are right the Big 10 has not been squeaky clean, but most of the schools at least pretended to follow the rules.Love the "Southeast" comments. They knew they lost their (illegal) competitive advantage once the B1G began (legally) funding players. No suggestion the B1G had always been squeaky clean, but no doubt NIL and Rev Share placed these two conferences on more equal footing.
