Day 3 of the 2022 Big Ten Tournament is coming to a close and what a day it has been so far with three of the top four seeds falling in quarterfinals action. The nightcap of the quarterfinals features No. 3-seed Purdue vs. No. 11 seed Penn State, which is coming off an upset win over Ohio State on Thursday.

The Purdue Boilermakers started off the game slow but found their offensive rhythm in the second 10 minutes of the first half. As a team, Purdue is shooting 50 percent from the field and two of six from deep. Penn State is not too far off at 42.3 from the field and 4 of 11 from long range. Boilermakers start guard Jaden Ivey leads all scorers at the half with 11 points as the Boilermakers hold a 35-31 lead.

While an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is on the line, many teams in the league are hoping to strengthen their resume ahead of Selection Sunday. On3’s latest Bracketology had the Big Ten as a nine-bid league in the big dance.

Here’s the full bracket for the 2022 Big Ten Tournament from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Purdue 69, Penn State 61

The Purdue Boilermakers are one win away from the Big Ten conference tournament championship game. Jaden Ivey had his fingerprints all over the game, scoring leading both teams in scoring with 17 points. However, it wasn’t their offense that won the game for Purdue, it was their defense down the stretch. After Penn State brought it to within one, the Boilermakers’ defense locked in and shoutout the Nittany Lions over the final 3 minutes of the game. Up next for Purdue is a rematch against the Michigan State Spartans in the semifinals. The two teams faced off in an epic battle late in February that was ended by some late game heroics from the Spartans to secure the home win.

Michigan State 69, Wisconsin 63

The first half of the matchup between Michigan State and Wisconsin has been a defensive battle martyred with both teams struggling to make open shots. The Spartans are shooting 33 percent from the field, and the Badgers are just over 24 percent. Neither team has made a three-pointer in the half as they have gone a combined 0 for 11 from deep.

If there is one thing Spartans head coach Tom Izzo has proven over the years, it is he can win the big games. And on Friday he led Michigan State to arguably its biggest win of the season as they knocked off No. 2 seed Wisconsin. After a defensive struggle in the first half, both teams nearly doubled their point production. Marcus Bingham Jr. set the tone in the second half and finished the game with 18 points, 11 rebound and three blocks as Michigan State picked up a 69-63 win. The Spartans now await the winner of tonight’s nightcap matchup between Penn State and Purdue.

Iowa 84, Rutgers 74

Rutgers came out the gates blazing, while Iowa was trudging through the first ten minutes. Then, everything changed during a 15-1 run by the Hawkeyes. At halftime, Iowa now leads Rutgers by a score of 41-32.

Evidently, Iowa star Keegan Murray wanted to avenge the Hawkeyes loss to Rutgers from earlier this season, where the Scarlet Knights held him to just 13 points. Well, the star forward is doing that and more. Murray has 18 points and four rebounds, dominating Rutgers through the first half.

As for the Scarlet Knight, star center Clifford Omoruyi threw down some nasty alley-oops in the first half, scoring 7 points. However, star forward Ron Harper Jr. was largely taken out of the equation, scoring just 5 points in the first half.

Keegan Murray set the single-season scoring record, 750 points, for the Hawkeyes on their way to a quarterfinal victory over Rutgers. After struggling to make shots in their 48-46 loss earlier in the season Murrary and Iowa could not be stopped on Friday. The six-foot-eight forward finished the game leading all scorers with 26 points, and added 8 rebounds. Up next for Iowa is a semifinal match against the No.9 seed Indiana Hoosiers.

Earlier on Friday, Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell recieved a four-year contract extension. If he wants to celebrate in style, the Scarlet Knights will need a much better performance in the second half.

Indiana 65, Illinois 63

Illinois guard Andre Curbelo had a great look at a possible game-winning basket, but the ball didn’t find the bottom of the net. Thus, Indiana pulled a tremendous upset — capturing a 65-63 victory over the top seed of the Big Ten Tournament.

In victory, Trayce Jackson-Davis led the way for the Hoosiers. Against Illinois, the forward scored 21 points, while accumulating seven rebounds and three assists. Additionally, guard Xavier Johnson helped the cause, scoring 13 points and dishing out six assists.

On the other hand, Kofi Cockburn was unstoppable for the Fighting Illini. The star center led Illinois with 23 points, while also pulling down ten rebounds. Additionally, forward Coleman Hawkins was fantastic — scoring 18 points and gaining four rebounds.

Still, it’s Mike Woodson and the Hoosiers moving on to the Semifinals. Now, a red-hot Indiana team will await their opponent for Saturday’s game.
