Despite being unranked, Coen Carr, a 6-foot-7 small forward originally from Atlanta has seen his recruitment start to heat up in recent months.

The athletic wing now plays at Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina, a part of the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC). This elite high school basketball league features the nation’s top teams, such as Montverde Academy, IMG Academy, Sunrise Christian Academy, and others. The games air on ESPN, giving the players who participate in this conference, ample amounts of exposure.

Carr has officially announced a top ten schools – Auburn, Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, TCU, Tennessee, Tennessee State, and Vanderbilt.

It’s also important to note that Auburn and TCU have not yet offered, but Carr says they’re showing a high amount of interest.

Carr has yet to take any official visits but says those are currently in the works of being set up. He says he would like to visit Vanderbilt, Arizona State, Indiana, Georgia, and Tennessee officially.

However, he has taken unofficial visits to Clemson, Vanderbilt, Georgia, and Tennessee State.

He broke down those trips with On3.

Breakdown of unofficial visits

Clemson: “The campus was great. People consider them a football school but their basketball facilities are really nice. Everything is really up-to-date and recent. The people were great. So yeah, it’s a family type of feel there.”

Vanderbilt: “It was great. One of my friends goes there, Jamaine Mann. So I knew him. The campus was great. They have their own doctor, like a hospital right inside the campus so their recovery there is awesome. Everybody knows academics there is A1 so it has a really good feel to it.”

Georgia: “It was good. They’re really close to home. I know they’re known as more of a football school too, but their basketball is also great. It’s close to home so my parents could come to every game. The coaches all love you, so once they offer you, they’re all like a family. Real good feel there. Tom Crean offered me on the visit so that felt good too.”

Tennessee State: “It was good. It’s not the biggest but they still have a lot of great things. Their student section, they come out every game, real loud, real good feel. The gym is great, even though it might be a little small. But when it gets packed, it’s loud. But yeah, real good campus.”

Carr gives his thoughts on remaining schools on his list

Georgia Tech: “They’re even closer to home and they’re a really good school too. They talk to me a lot. They’re one of the schools that text me all the time. I have a good relationship with coach Julian (Swartz). That’s another really good school that I’m considering going to.”

Indiana: “Coach (Mike) Woodson is a great coach. Coach Yasir (Rosemond), both of them, have been talking to me a lot. They tell me how they’re going to use me in their system. I’m trying to get up there (for a visit).”

Tennessee: “They had a few players go to the NBA, Grant Williams. They have a player right now, Kennedy Chandler, that’s really good. A lot of players on their team have similar play styles to mine. They told me how they’re going to use me as a player that can guard multiple positions and I like playing defense so that sounds really good to me. The coaches keep on me constantly and keep sending me stuff so yeah, Tennessee is a great school.”

Arizona State: “PAC-12 is a really good conference to me. Arizona is a great place, a great place to be in. And I like wearing shorts, I don’t like to be cold so Arizona is hot so that’s another great thing. They’ve had some great players come out of there too.”

TCU: “They’ve been talking to me a good amount since they started recruiting me. Their coach has been talking to me about their academics and campus life. It’s a school where I feel like I could play and make an immediate impact.”

Auburn: “They have a great program. They’ve been good for the last five or six years so that shows me that they’re consistent. They always bring in a lot of talent and I know if I go there, then I’m going to have some dogs with me. I feel like we would have a good chance of winning it all.”

Carr has a dream school

Despite not being on his list, Carr grew up an Oregon fan.

“When I played football as a kid, we were called the Ducks, and our colors were green and yellow so ever since then, I’ve just been rocking with them.”

Carr says he watches both Oregon’s football and basketball games.

Carr describes his game

“I feel like I’m a player that brings energy, defense, and I feel like I’m a gamechanger. I can change the game around, and bring the game in our favor.”

Carr says he wants to improve his playmaking, ball handling, passing, and shooting. He says his biggest strength is finishing and his defensive capabilities.

Commitment timetable

Carr is hoping to make a decision after the AAU season, hopefully by August.

He says he’s looking for “a school that’s big on player development, that works with their players outside of practice. Also, a school that’s high on academics and a school that’s going to make me better off the court and make me a better man.”

Scouting Report on Carr

Here is what On3’s National Recruiting Analyst Jamie Shaw had to say about Coen Carr:

“Coen Carr is a lengthy and highly explosive forward. When he is engaged on the defensive end of the floor, he has high upside there. He is switchable and has the upside to guard up and down a lineup. Offensively, he is most comfortable cutting off-ball and playing out of the dunker spots. The jump shot needs work, as does his creation in the half-court, but he is gaining more confidence with the ball. He does a lot of things that fit the modern game.”
