Taison Chatman is the No. 46 player in the 2023 On3 Consensus. The Minneapolis (MN) Totino-Grace guard has basketball in his blood as his brother and dad played college basketball.

“I am a little bit of everything,” Chatman told On3. “I can facilitate, shoot; whatever my coaches need me to do, I feel I can do it all. I have been putting on good weight and playing better with the physicality. I watch a lot of Damian Lillard and Devin Booker, how they get to their spots and can raise up.”

The 6-foot-3 guard is playing this summer with the D1 Minnesota program on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit. On3 caught up with Taison Chatman after one of his recent games to talk about visits and which schools he is feeling the love from.

“I have been on two unofficial visits so far, Minnesota and Iowa,” Chatman said. “I don’t have any official visits set yet, but I will start getting into that soon. I’m looking at Texas; I know Xavier wants me to get over there, Northwestern, and I’ll look at a couple others probably.” (editor’s note – Kansas offered after this event ended)

Chatman talks recruiting

Minnesota: “They are the hometown state, so I knew a lot about them going into the visit. Their fans really love their sports and are all about their sports teams. Every time you go there, it is a lot of love.”

Iowa: “They play really fast for a Big 10 team. I like to play really fast too. Coach (Fran) McCaffery tells me he likes how I play and thinks I can fit in with what they do.”

Texas: “They have a lot of depth. They produce a lot of NBA-ready guys every year. I feel like people who go there are destined to go to the league.”

Northwestern: “They are a high academic school, so they are all about grades which caught my eye. Player-wise, they play five out and throw in a couple ball screens. I think one of the best parts of my game is my reads in ball screens, so I think I could fit in with their play style.”

Xavier: “They just got a whole new coaching staff, so I am interested in seeing what Coach (Sean) Miller is going to bring to the program.”

I hear a lot from UConn and Virginia Tech, Kansas a little. We’ll see,” Chatman said.

Chatman’s take

“I want to get a feel for the relationship with the coaches,” Chatman said. “That is a huge part for me. Play-style will be big; I want to play in a fast system.

“Yeah, we got a basketball family. My brother, Tommy Chatman, played DII at Northern State, and my dad, also Thomas Chatman, played DII for a while and then overseas.”

On3’s take

Taison Chatman has a basketball frame with good size and nice length. What stands out the most in his game is his ability to play in the pick and roll. He can make all the reads and does so with a never rushed pace. The motor can get hot and cold, and there are times when he looks disengaged. Chatman has deep range, and he is comfortable off the bounce or off the catch. He is an intriguing 2/1 combo guard who can play off the ball or initiate in certain offensive sets.
