Asa Newell is the 2024 On3 150 No. 5 player. The 6-foot-9 forward transferred this summer to reigning Geico National Champion Montverde (FL) Academy to play in the NIBC League.

“I’m pretty good in a lot of areas,” Newell told On3. “My three-point shot, running the floor, rebounding, I’m working on my post game. Right now, I’m really trying to refine my game and add little things here and there. My goal is to be dominant, so I watch a lot of Giannis Antetokounmpo and how he comes down the floor and dunks on people. Obviously, we are different, but I want to be dominant.”

So far this season, the five-star is averaging 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per 32 minutes. On3 caught up with Asa Newell to talk about his official visit schedule.

“I’ve taken two official visits, Georgia and Indiana,” Newell said. “I’m talking with Texas about setting something up.”

Newell talks recruitment

Georgia: “I learned they are a very family oriented atmosphere. All their coaches are doing a great job recruiting me. It is my hometown, I was born and raised in Athens, and my brother (Jaden Newell) is a redshirt freshman on the team there. I’ve built a great relationship with Coach Mike White, and Erik Pastrana was my very first offer when he was at Oklahoma State.

“We went for a football game, and that atmosphere was crazy. If I were to go there, I’m trying to get love on both sides.”

Indiana: “My favorite part of that visit was it is a basketball school. All their fans are great, you know, Hoosier nation. They have one of the best fan bases in college basketball. Coach Ya (Yasir Rosemond) and Coach (Mike) Woodson, they are always in contact with me.

“Their facilities, the atmosphere, the vibe there is that you’re going to go there to get better.”

Texas: “I talk with Coach Brandon (Chappell) there. I’m trying to set a visit up there for after Geico. They’re a winning program and have been doing a good job this year, playing with a lot of energy and running the floor. That is kind of how I play as well. They bring a lot of intensity on both ends of the floor.”

“Schools like Kentucky and Duke have been in contact, but they haven’t offered yet,” Newell said. “But I understand you have to build a relationship and all.”

In Newell’s words

“I want to go somewhere I can get better,” Newell said. “Obviously, I want to win, but I want to go somewhere I can be put in a position to get to the NBA. Whatever platform will best help me achieve those goals.

“I’m still trying to figure out my own game, so I’m nowhere near the end result of where I’m going to be. We’ll see where I am style-wise my senior year and talk with programs about how they’ll use me and all that.

“My mom wants me to go to college, get my college degree. So, right now, I’m focused on college. My mom won’t let me go the G-League route or anything like that.”
