One thing Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline knows how to do well is spot talent. Well, when it comes to the Chicago Bears, he sees a lack thereof.

After the Bears — led by former Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields — fell to the Washington Commanders on Thursday night, Hartline took to Twitter to rip the receiving corps Fields has to work with in Chicago.

“These WRs stink,” he tweeted.

Fields’ receiving corps in Chicago is much different than the one he had at Ohio State with Hartline. With the Buckeyes, he was throwing to Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson and Jameson Williams — all of whom were top-12 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Thursday night, his leading receivers were Dante Pettis and Darnell Mooney, the latter of whom was targeted on the failed final play of the game as the Commanders defeated the Bears 12-7 at Soldier Field. Last week, though, Ihmir Smith-Marsette made a crucial mistake by failing to get out of bounds, which allowed the Minnesota Vikings to strip the ball and seal a victory over the Bears.

It was yet another rough performance for Chicago’s new-look offense under new coordinator Luke Getsy and Fields, who’s in his first full season as a starter. On the whole Thursday, Fields went 14-for-27 for 190 yards, a touchdown pass to Pettis and an interception. Chicago entered Thursday’s game with the worst passing offense in the NFL with 583 passing yards through the first five games of the year.

With the loss, the Bears fell to 2-4 on the season as they get ready for a Monday Night Football matchup next week against the New England Patriots. Washington, meanwhile, got its second win of the year and Brian Robinson Jr. scored the first touchdown of his young NFL career in the effort.
