With his exuberant and unique game-day ensembles, Cam Newton has made it clear that looking good means a lot to him. His passion for fashion almost resulted in the former Heisman Trophy attending a university not named Florida or Auburn.

On an episode of Eli’s Places, Cam Newton revealed to Eli Manning and former Project Runway host Tim Gunn that he heavily considered Virginia Tech because of the team’s color scheme.

“I considered a school just because of the uniform – Virginia Tech,” Newton said to Manning, “that maroon orange collab.”

The Oregon Ducks could have easily swiped up the former Panthers star thanks to their green gear but they never pursued him as a recruit.

“I was hoping to get recruited by Oregon,” Newton said. “Never happened. Hawaii – they had that dark green, black.”

Although Newton committed to Florida out of high school and signed with another SEC program in Auburn after a stint at Blinn C.C., he knocked the conference’s general lack of “fashion.”

“A lot of schools in the SEC really isn’t, like, fashion,” Newton said.

The former All-SEC quarterback isn’t with an NFL team to start the 2022 season. However, if he ends up joining one, it could have something to do with their color scheme. Newton definitely seems to favor orange.

Newton’s best NFL season came in 2015, when he won the MVP after finishing with 3,837 yards passing and 45 total touchdowns. The Panthers finished that year with a 15-1 record before falling in the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos. Newton is still the franchise’s all-time leading passer with 29,725 yards and 186 touchdowns.

Despite the massive history of success, Carolina opted to cut the veteran QB following an injury-shortened 2019 season. He eventually landed with the New England Patriots, spending one year as the starter in Boston before getting the axe in August 2021.
