Virginia had a shot to clinch a College Football Playoff berth win a win over Duke in the ACC title game, and it came down to the wire, going to overtime. Quarterback Chandler Morris made a fatal error that cost the Cavaliers, though.

After the Blue Devils struck first and scored a touchdown in the first overtime period, Morris and company returned to the field needing to match it. The offense was hot after tying the game just before the end of regulation.

The offense went into its bag and pulled out a trick play on the first play of overtime. A double pass landed back with Chandler Morris, who looked to throw downfield.

He fired deep but missed Duke defender Luke Mergott undercutting the route. Mergott picked it off, ending the game.

Chandler Morris was downright distraught after the game. He was seen leaving the field wiping away tears, knowing the playoff shot was gone. You can view that below.

Morris, who has carried Virginia for most of the season, was not his usual self in the ACC title game. He threw two uncharacteristic interceptions and was 21-of-40 passing for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

On the season, Chandler Morris has thrown for 2,586 yards and 14 touchdowns, against seven interceptions. He has also run for 248 yards and five scores.

Virginia had a fantastic campaign, going 10-2 in the regular season. The program’s only losses were to NC State and Wake Forest, both by a single score.

With that, Virginia entered Saturday’s ACC Championship Game with a chance to clinch a playoff berth. A win would have put the Cavaliers into the field as the ACC champion, ranked 17th in the latest CFP rankings.

So Chandler Morris’ emotion coming off the field on Saturday was certainly understandable. It was a tough pill to swallow.
