With the head coaching carousel coming to a close, another round should be coming with assistant head coaches. One name that has been popular in the rumor mill is Tom Herman.

Andy Staples of The Athletic said he talking to Herman on Wednesday regarding a possible return to college football. The former Houston and Texas head coach shot down those rumors.

“Talked to Tom Herman today regarding rumors surrounding his name being mentioned for possible college head coaching and/or coordinator positions,” Staples said in a tweet. “He told me that he’s happy in the NFL and that his preference is to remain in that league.”

Herman has been working in the NFL for the first time in his career with the Chicago Bears as an offensive analyst. He has been working with head coach Matt Nagy and offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.

Before hitting the professional ranks, Herman spent time at some of the biggest college programs in the country. He was the Ohio State offensive coordinator from 2011-2014, winning a national championship in his final season.

Houston was the first program to give him an opportunity as a head coach before he jumped to take over Texas. Herman was fired from the 40 Acres after the 2020 season, having a 32-18 record. Off-the-field issues led to the Longhorns moving on as well.

Justin Fields MRI comes back negative

Many in Chicago are thankful for the Bears drafting Justin Fields. However, the former Ohio State star was not on the field when Chicago traveled to Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day showdown with the Detriot Lions.

Unfortunately, Fields suffered an injury against the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to Thursday’s games, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed the extent of Fields’ injuries.

“Sources: Bears QB Justin Fields, already ruled out today, suffered a few cracked ribs on Sunday, further testing revealed,” tweeted Rapoport. “The X-Ray and CT scans were clean, but the MRI showed the additional issues. They are tiny fractures, not deemed major, and Fields should return shortly.”

The Bears were able to get a Thanksgiving Day win without Fields, defeating Detroit 16-14. Kicker Cario Santos was the hero, hitting the game-winning field goal as time expired.

Heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, Fields is going to have limited reps. Dalton will get a majority of first-team snaps as Nagy continues to fight for his job in Chicago.

Herman and the Bears are 4-7 on the season and are in third place in the NFC North.
