The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow recently gave his take on the ongoing situation between rival the Cleveland Browns and their former starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. Burrow acknowledges that Mayfield is in a tough situation but believes the fellow Heisman Trophy winner will land on his feet.

“That’s a tough situation. He was hurt all last year. Every time we play him, he balls,” Burrow said. “First time we played him – Thursday night during Week 2 of my rookie year – we lost like 34-30. The next time we played them, I throw for 400 yards. He goes like 25-for-28 with five touchdowns. He went on a two-minute drive, [they scored a] touchdown, they won the game.”

The former LSU Tiger has not had much success in his duels against the former Oklahoma Sooner, or the Browns, for that matter. Burrow has faced Cleveland three times in his career and has lost all three times. But in two of the three losses, Burrow actually outdueled Mayfield.

“I think when you have a guy like Deshaun [Watson], you gotta take a chance at that because he’s such a great player. But Baker will land on his feet. He’s a really good player.”

Mayfield is still recovering from surgery to repair the torn labrum in his nonthrowing arm. However, even if that wasn’t the case, it is unlikely he would show up for the Browns’ upcoming voluntary camps and OTAs. For now, the former number one overall pick is still a Brown. But whatever team winds up getting Mayfield, we’ll be getting a talented young quarterback eager to prove that Cleveland should have never moved on from him.

Burrow on 2022 season: ‘Now we know what it takes’ to win it all

Joe Burrow has the blueprint now. According to the former LSU star quarterback, while losing the Super Bowl to the Los Angeles Rams was heartbreaking, the Cincinnati Bengals are better for it. Now, the franchise understands what it takes to capture a Lombardi Trophy.

Speaking with Ben Baby of ESPN, Burrow explained why the loss to the Rams will be better for the Bengals in the long-run.

“Going into last year, we knew we were good, but I think going into the playoffs, we knew we could win but we weren’t really sure what it took,” Burrow said Tuesday, per Pro Football Talk. “We just went out there and played really hard and together as a team, and it worked out.

“Now, we know what it takes and we have that experience in our back pockets going forward.”

Experience changes everything. While the Rams won the Super Bowl last season, it took Los Angeles losing to the New England Patriots on the biggest stage a couple of seasons ago to give them the insight on what it takes to be the best. Perhaps a similar trajectory is in the Bengals future.

Nevertheless, it’s impossible to bet against Joe Burrow and the Bengals. If you didn’t learn that lesson last season, they’ll be out to remind you that these aren’t your father’s Bengals throughout the 2022-23 NFL season.
