Clemson cornerback Fred Davis II was arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless driving for speeding 115 mph, leading to an accident that involved a mail truck. The Clemson Police Department says Davis was travelling 60 mph over the posted speed limit before the collision. Davis has no major injuries from the crash, but the mail truck driver did sustain severe injuries which “will require months or longer for recovery.”

Davis chose to turn himself in on Sunday and is now out on bail. He will now await trial for the July 21 incident. The school says he will remain with the program but is subject to internal discipline, per the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook. In addition, head coach Dabo Swinney will have the option to recommend a course of action moving forward.

“This willful and wanton action severely limited his ability to navigate safely through traffic and caused Davis to lose control of his vehicle prior to the collision,” read the CPD release.

Davis is pursuing a degree in criminal justice at Clemson. He is a Jacksonville, Florida resident who played high school football at Trinity Christian Academy. At 6-foot, 185 pounds, Davis was a four-star prospect ranking No. 53 in the country and the No. 7 at cornerback.

Impact on Clemson

Davis played in 11 games as a freshman in 2020, finishing the season with 13 tackles and two pass deflections. Both of his deflections came in the ACC Championship game against Notre Dame. He was projected to take on an increased role in the defense this season with the departure of Derion Kendrick.

Clemson will open the season against Georgia on Sept. 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is unclear at this time whether Fred Davis’s arrest will affect his status for the season.

Juniors Andrew Booth Jr. and Sheridan Jones expect to play a significant role at cornerback this season as well. In total, The Tigers return nine starters on defense this season, including veteran leaders James Skalski and Nolan Turner. Defensive linemen Bryan Bresee and Myles Murphy are back as sophomores, looking to improve on their impressive debuts.
