Each week, On3’s Matt Zenitz takes a look at some interesting stats coming out of that weekend’s games. Here are 13 such stats from Week 5.

3a: Utah CB Clark Phillips became the first Power 5 player since 2020 with three interceptions in a game, accomplishing that during a 42-16 win over Oregon State. The 2021 All-Pac 12 selection now has seven career interceptions, including four this season.

3b: Kansas State DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah recorded three sacks and a forced fumble during the Wildcats’ 37-28 win over Texas Tech. It was his third game in the past two seasons with at least three sacks.

5: Ohio State RB Miyan Williams tied a school record with five touchdown runs during Ohio State’s 49-10 win over Rutgers. Pete Johnson (1974) and Keith Byars (1984) are the other two Buckeyes running backs with five touchdown runs in a game. Williams finished with 189 yards and the five TDs on 21 carries.

8a: During its 2-2 stretch the past four games, Texas A&M has scored just eight offensive touchdowns. That includes just one offensive TD through three quarters of its 42-24 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday.

8b: Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry leads the nation with eight punt returns of at least 20 yards. No one else has more than three. Four of McKinstry’s returns have gained at least 40 yards.

10: Illinois’ 34-10 win over Wisconsin marked the fourth time in its first five games that an opponent scored 10 points or fewer. DC Ryan Walters has Illinois ranked No. 1 nationally in scoring defense (8.4 points per game).

11.8: Just two years removed from ranking 126th nationally in total defense, Ole Miss enters Week 6 ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense under first-year DC Chris Partridge (11.8 points per game). The Rebels, who beat then-No. 7 Kentucky 22-19 on Saturday, also are tied for 11th nationally in sacks (3.2 per game), rank 28th with nine takeaways and 28th in total defense (315.6 yards per game).

29.8: Colorado, which fired coach Karl Dorrell on Sunday, has been outscored by an average margin of 29.8 points per game during its 0-5 start. The Buffaloes rank last among Power 5 teams in scoring offense (13.4 points per game) and scoring defense (43.2 points per game).

96: Oklahoma’s defense has surrendered 96 points in the Sooners’ past two games, losses to Kansas State and TCU. In those games, the opposing quarterbacks – K-State’s Adrian Martinez and TCU’s Max Duggan – have combined to average 268 passing yards and an additional 132 rushing yards while accounting for 10 combined touchdowns. In all, TCU racked up 668 yards, including 361 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns while averaging 8.8 yards per carry.

129: With 129 rushing yards during Illinois’ upset of Wisconsin, RB Chase Brown now has five consecutive 100-yard rushing games to start the season. He’s the first Fighting Illini running back since at least 2000 with five 100-yard games in a row to start a season. The previous Illinois running back who came closest to that was All-American and former Detroit Lions second-round pick Mikel Leshoure, who had 100-yard outings in four of the Illini’s first five games in 2010.

146.2: Former Florida State running back Khalan Laborn continues his career resurgence at Marshall. The former five-star recruit ranks third nationally with 146.2 rushing yards per game. His 191-yard rushing game during a 28-7 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday was his fifth consecutive 100-yard game to start the season.

319: The aforementioned Martinez has run for 319 yards in Kansas State’s past two games, including 171 yards and three rushing scores in the Wildcats’ win over Texas Tech on Saturday. He also threw for 116 yards and a touchdown.

736: Kent State piled up 736 yards in a 31-24 overtime win over Ohio. It’s the second-highest yardage total in an FBS game since 2020. The Golden Flashes also became the first-ever FBS team to have a 240-yard rusher (Marquez Cooper) and 240-yard receiver (Dante Cephas) in the same game.
